What is a Flama?
Flama is a paulownia blanks manufacturer firm, to produce 99% organic surfboards.
Are Flama’s laminated?
No, they aren’t. Flama boards are made of paulownia, a water resistant wood. Only linseed oil and polyurethane varnish are needed to protect them from hits and other damages.
What’s paulownia?
Paulownia has grown in popularity the past few years thanks to the alaia movement. It’s almost magical: resistant, but at the same time soft, light, flexible and easy to work with.
Why just 99% organic?
Because we still have to use polyurethane glue to stick together the “sandwich” and varnish. Although they are solvent-free, they are not totally toxic-free products. We are working to be 100% organic.
How is a Flama constructed?
The process to construct a customized board is the following:
1- The surfer explains to the shaper what kind of board he wants
2- The shaper designs the board through a CAD software and sends this file to Flama
3- Flama designs and constructs the blank according to the design specifications, and sends the blank to the shaper
4- The shaper starts working as usual and the board takes shape, but avoiding the laminating and glassing processes.
How can I get a Flama?
It will be possible to order boards both through the web page and through any of the Familiy Flama shapers.
Take into account that Flama doesn’t produce to have boards on stock, just some limited series of some Signature Models.
Knowing this, there exist some possibilities to obtain a Flama:
Signature Models: boards designed and shaped by Flama Family shapers, with limited units and measurements.
Signature Model Blanks: paulownia blanks to shape a Signature Model (available soon).
Custom: customize boards, designed and shaped by Flama Family shapers.
When can I order a Flama?
We expect that ordering Flama boards will be possible from July 2011.
Does Flama export boards to foreign countries?
Avoiding exportation is part of our philosophy, as we believe in the next sentence: “local manufacture, local shape, local consumption”. For now, Flama will offer blanks to Spanish, French and Portuguese shapers. The future Flama objective is to move the manufacture closer to the consumption place, and try to minimize transport as much as possible.
Which shapers offer Flama boards?
By now, these are the shapers that can offer a Flama. However, our intention is to incorporate new shapers to the Flama Family, as long as we advice them about the special features of our paulownia blanks.

How much does a Flama weight?
A 5’10’’ x 21’x2 ½ can be in the region of 4/5kg. It’s the same weight as a classic PU board with two fibre layers and gloss-coat.
How much is a Flama board?
A finished board will be in the region of 700/900€, depending on the kind of board, if it’s custom or not, the kind of fins, etc.
Why other brand’s wood boards are more expensive?
There are some factors to take into account. On the one hand, our constructive system: Flama takes about 6 hours to construct a custom blank. On the other hand, the shape process is very fast, as boards don’t need to be laminated.
What are the differences between a wood and a PU shaping process?
There are almost no differences. Only take into account that Flama blanks are hollowed, so there is a polish limit. Shapers know any time this limit thanks to the template we provide them.
